New Stories for 2008

When we see homeless adults on the street, many of us either dig deep in our pockets for spare change or we avoid eye contact and hurry away. But there’s also an unseen legion of homeless young people living on DC streets and in shelters around the region. They face challenges that can permanently alter the course of their lives. Welcome to Youth Voices

The Youth Voices program teaches high school students how to create a radio feature story about an issue that affects their lives and the larger community in which they live. The workshops are held three times a week during the fall, spring, and summer semesters at the studios and offices of WAMU 88.5, and allow students to interact with professional radio journalists and producers. The reports are considered for airing on WAMU 88.5 and are offered nationally through PRX, an Internet content-sharing platform through which many Youth Voices pieces have aired on stations from New York to Oregon.

Students learn to develop and research a radio report, conduct live interviews, write radio scripts, and use editing software to produce polished radio news feature stories. WAMU 88.5 accepts applications throughout the year, and chooses six students for each group through a selective application process. To request an application, click here.
