The aftermath of hurricane Irene is being assessed on the Delmarva Peninsula, but the region appears at first glance to have weathered the storm.

The winds have died down enough this morning that Virginia Dominion Power says they have a full crew out restoring power to people in northern Virginia and across the state.

Hurricane Irene's overnight visit left hundreds of thousands without power in Maryland Sunday morning. And around 200,000 of those customers are in Prince George's County, 65,000 are in Montgomery County, and the rest are in the District.

Pepco says there are at least 90 down wires in D.C. right now, and some of those are live wires, meaning there are sparks and smoke coming from them.

Officials in Howard County are urging residents to stay off the road as they work to restore power to traffic lights on one of the county's busiest roads.
