Questions and answers about your Day Sponsorship with WAMU 88.5
What is a Day Sponsorship?
Donors who contribute $720 and greater are entitled to “sponsor” one day of programs on WAMU 88.5. The donor will receive three on-air credits for their personal message on a single day.
How do I become eligible for a Day Sponsorship?
Day Sponsorships are a special form of recognition for donors who contribute $720 and greater to WAMU 88.5. Donors who contribute $1440 and greater become eligible for two Day Sponsorships.
I made my donation. What is the next step to getting my message on the air?
The easiest way to submit your Day Sponsorship message is to e-mail it to firstname.lastname@example.org. If we do not receive your message electronically you will receive a Day Sponsorship form in the mail with your acknowledgment letter after you make your qualifying contribution. If you have a specific date in mind we encourage you to contact Member Services (202-885-1252) as early as possible – even if you are not yet sure of the text you want read on the air. Due to the popularity of the Day Sponsorship program, our schedule fills up quickly.
How many times will my message be read on the air?
Your message will be read on-air 3 times on a single day.
What if the date I choose is not available?
WAMU 88.5 has 2 Day Sponsorship slots available each day. Our Member Services team will do everything possible to accommodate your date request, but in the event that your preferred date is unavailable, we encourage you to have a second choice in mind.
How much notice do you require to get my message on the air?
We require a minimum of 14 days notice to get a message approved, produced, and scheduled to be read on-air. If you have a specific date in mind we strongly recommend contacting our Member Services office as early as possible.
How long can my Day Sponsorship message be?
Day Sponsorship messages must fit within our guidelines and may be up to 15 seconds long when read in an even, unhurried manner.
Can I make an anonymous Day Sponsorship?
No. In compliance with FCC rules and station policy, the first and last name of the person making the donation must be read on the air with the message (ie: Today's programs are made possible in part by [your first and last name]).
Can I donate my Day Sponsorship?
Day Sponsorships are non-transferable and the on-air message must announce the name of the person making the donation. However, you may use your Day Sponsorship to recognize a nonprofit organization, as long as the message is not overtly promotional in nature. For example, you may appropriately acknowledge an organization’s positive impact on the community or the people responsible for the organization’s success (staff, volunteers, etc), but you may not include an organization’s contact information (addresses, phone numbers or web addresses) or formal mission statement. The following are examples of such messages:
"Today's programs are made possible in part by Donald and Betty Draper, in support of the American Lung Association."
"Today's programs are made possible in part by Bill Compton, in honor of the dedicated staff and volunteers of The American Red Cross."
Can my business/non-profit organization purchase a Day Sponsorship?
Day Sponsorships are a special benefit available only to individual donors. If an individual at a business or non-profit would like to make a donation to WAMU 88.5 and use their Day Sponsorship to recognize the work of his or her colleagues, we will try to accommodate the request. However, the message must be personal in nature, such as:
"Today's programs are made possible in part by Amanda Summers, in recognition of the dedicated staff of the Nature Conservancy."
My business/charity/school/church is sponsoring an event; can I use my Day Sponsorship to announce the event?
Day Sponsorships must be personal, non-commercial and non-promotional nature. Therefore we cannot use a Day Sponsorship to announce times, dates or locations of any event. Occasionally we may air a message in recognition of the staff of an organization sponsoring an event, such as:
"Today's programs are made possible in part by Tim Wolfe, in recognition of the staff and volunteers working at the 2011 Komen Race for the Cure."
If you would like to announce specific information about an organization or event on the air, please contact Anthony Hayes in our Underwriting Department at 202-885-1248 or email@example.com.
How will I know what times my message will be read on the air?
Once we have received your message and your Day Sponsorship has been scheduled, a Member Services Associate will contact you with the times your message will be read on the air. Please make sure you provide a valid email address and daytime phone number when you submit your message.
Can you make sure my message is read during my favorite show?
Day Sponsorships times are set well in advance, but we are occasionally able to accommodate special requests. Please contact our Member Services Department for more information.
I gave a gift two years ago and I never redeemed my Day Sponsorship. Can I redeem it now?
Day Sponsorships must be redeemed within twelve months of the contribution date. If you have any questions please contact our Member Services Department.
Does a Day Sponsorship have a fair market value? (Does accepting a Day Sponsorship affect the tax deductibility of my donation?)
No. Day Sponsorships are not sold, and as a result, do not have a fair market value. Therefore, a Day Sponsorship does not affect the tax deductibility of your contribution.
Who has final approval of what can be read on the air?
Our Director of Programming has the final approval of all Day Sponsorship messages.
