Joseph Arthur On World Cafe

Today, World Cafe welcomes back Joseph Arthur. He's appeared on the Cafe many times since the release of his debut album on Peter Gabriel's Real World Records in 1997. In the past year, the prolific singer-songwriter has released two albums: Fistful of Mercy, a collaboration with Ben Harper and Dhani Harrison, and The Graduation Ceremony, a solo record.

Today's performances are from a recent concert at World Cafe Live, where Arthur played using his trademark looping of parts with a tape unit. Also a visual artist, Arthur describes similarities between creating loop-based compositions and filling a canvas.

"It's kind of like painting an abstract painting, where you lay down strokes and shapes just kind of arise and manifest. That's what it's like with sound. There's an element of chaos," he explains.

Hear more from Arthur, and live versions of songs from The Graduation Ceremony, on today's World Cafe.
