Mary Cliff

Host, Traditions with Mary Cliff

Mary Cliff was a radio junkie and music fan growing up in the Washington area. In the “folk scare” of the early ‘60s, she sang in “hootenannies” and worked at D.C.’s legendary Cellar Door nightclub. Entering radio in 1966 as a typist, then programmer, she’s been on air since 1968 as a progressive rock host on WAVA, WHFS, and WETA. At WETA from 1972 to 2007, she produced and presented classical music, news, public affairs, arts interviews, and folk music, honing skills in writing, engineering, editing and line producing for local and national programs. Mary is active in community arts and music organizations as a volunteer, board member, and as host/MC, and is a multiple winner of WAMMIE awards in the “most supportive of Washington music” category. She and her Saturday-night folk music program Traditions, known for its breadth of material and strong emphasis on artists and performances in the DC region, joined WAMU 88.5 in February 2007.
