New Driver's Licenses Comply with REAL ID Act

At the recommendation of the 9/11 Commission, Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005 directing the federal government to set tough, uniform standards for government-issued IDs, including driver's licenses. The goal was to make it harder for terrorists or other bad actors to get an official ID. On May 1, the District of Columbia will begin issuing new driver's licenses that comply with those standards.
