The holiday season is a critical time for most U.S. retailers. Merchants rack up at least a fifth of their annual sales in the last two months of the year, and sales in stores and on-line are expected to grow this year. The day after Thanksgiving - Black Friday - has long launched a three-day shopping frenzy across the nation. Now, a growing number of retailers are opening their doors a day earlier - on Thanksgiving Day. That has sparked a backlash – including protests from some of the employees who will be working behind cash registers on the holiday.
