Hosted by Sanford "Sandy" Ungar and presented by the Institute for Christian and Jewish Studies, With God on Our Side: From Rivalry to Reconciliation examines the roots of hatred in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam and considers whether people of faith can ever reconcile those divisions.
The program acknowledges the fact that while the world's great monotheistic faiths share centuries-old traditions, they are also locked in dangerous rivalries that permeate contemporary thought. It probes this duality and shares stories that confirm the power of faith to overcome legacies of hostility.
Ungar met with religious leaders and laypeople of profound faith, who talk about their relationship with their God and with "others." He then explored religious education by talking with a Jew, a Christian, and a Muslim. Each was raised either to hate or to disregard people of other religions, yet each had life-changing experiences that have resulted in their current work to foster inter-faith understanding. Finally, a panel of clergy discussed whether contemporary society can nurture the growth of spiritually alive pluralists.
With God on Our Side: From Rivalry to Reconciliation illuminates ways that people work beyond hatred and stereotypes. It is a program that offers hope, reconciliation, and peaceful solutions to ancient problems.
This program was produced by Richard Paul and Carol Beach and aired December 28th at 9pm.
