Students Speak Their Mind At Penn State Forum

Penn State students attended a forum on campus Wednesday night to discuss the child sex abuse scandal. Former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky is charged with abusing eight boys over a 15-year period. A new accuser, who is not part of the criminal case, has filed a lawsuit alleging Sandusky abused him more than 100 times and threatened his family to keep him quiet.

Will Eurozone Countries Give Up Control Of Budgets?

European leaders are considering a major step toward ending the region's debt crisis. They hope that by agreeing to tougher penalties for countries that break budget rules, they can entice the European Central Bank to do more to stem the crisis. But are countries willing to give up control of their budgets to preserve the eurozone?

In Miami, Plans For Mega-Casinos Bring Hope And Ire

A Malaysian developer plans to spend more than $3 billion to build a Miami casino that it says will be the world's largest. The gaming industry says its plans for the city's waterfront are a big win for the local economy. But critics, including The Walt Disney Co., are betting against them.

The West Drainage Ditch is the name of the creek that runs through Kalona, Iowa. Not the most appealing name, but a local newspaper editor is exploring plans to change the name. The city council has embraced the idea of putting the naming rights up for auction on eBay.

GOP, Obama Dispute How To Pay For Tax Holiday

Gene Sperling, head of the president's National Economic Council, talks to Steve Inskee about extending the payroll tax cut. The Obama administration is pushing Congress to extend the cut before it expires at the end of the year. Republicans are expected to vote no because it calls for a tax on the wealthy.

Drug Smuggling Tunnel Found On U.S.-Mexico Border

Federal agents in San Diego have discovered a sophisticated drug smuggling tunnel running under the U.S. Mexico border. The tunnel runs between two warehouses, one in Tijuana, the other in an industrial area of San Diego. It's so elaborate it even has an elevator at its entrance in Tijuana.

Poor Get A Stake In India's Booming Economy

Even a tiny plot of land in India can be a ticket out of poverty. That's because many government programs and benefits are tied to land ownership. One non-governmental organization is running a program to help the rural poor obtain the title to the land they till.

Central Banks Boot Europe's Struggling Banks

There was some good news amid the deep concern about Europe's sovereign debt crisis. Coordinated action by central banks, led by the Federal Reserve, provided some help for Europe's struggling commercial banks. Economics editor Zanny Minton Beddoes, of The Economist, talks to Steve Inskeep about Wednesday's surprise coordinated action that calmed global markets.

Gingrich Attracts Crowds In South Carolina

GOP voters welcomed Newt Gingrich as he campaigned in South Carolina this week. Gingrich crossed the state from the coastal counties to the mountains as he continued to rise in some polls. The former House Speaker is showcasing his experience and his ideas to Southern Republicans as he vies to become the GOP presidential nominee.

Boeing, Machinists Union Reach Tentative Deal

Boeing and the International Association of Machinists have reached a tentative deal that would extend the contract for four years and end Boeing's dispute with the National Labor Relations Board. If approved, the agreement would mean that a new version of the popular 737 model would be built by union workers in Washington state, and that the new 787 model could be assembled in South Carolina, which is a right-to-work state.

Obama Uses Pa. Trip To Push Tax Cut Extension

At a high school in Scranton, Pa., Wednesday, President Obama exhorted Republicans in Congress to extend the pay roll tax cut. He said putting money in the pockets of working people is more important than partisan politics.

Medicare To Cover Weight Loss Counseling

Medicare has announced that it will pay for primary care providers to counsel obese patients on losing weight and maintaining the weight loss. Medicare will pay doctors, nurses and physicians' assistants to help plan weight loss programs.

Life Savings Left In Donated Suit

Many of us have left something in a jacket at the dry cleaner so it's easy to relate to the man who took a suit to Goodwill and gave it away. Only after he left did he realize what a donation he'd made. The suit had $13,000 inside.

Utah Duck Hunter Is Shot By His Dog

A man was duck hunting in Box Elder County, Utah, when he climbed out of a boat to move decoys. He left his shotgun and his dog behind. The dog ended up stepping on the shotgun, and the hunter received 27 pellets of birdshot in the rear.
