Working A Shift With A Veteran Lifeguard

When most of us head to the pool to cool off, that's when Devin Rudnick's day starts to heat up.

Rudnick, 20, is the head lifeguard and manager of Tally Ho Swimclub in Potomac, Md. Even though he's been a lifeguard for 6 years, there's something every day that surprised him. He says, "little kids are pretty weird."

And Rudnick gets it. Not too long ago, he was one of those kids. "I felt like days at the pool were 40-hour days where I would just play forever." Rudnick says he loves seeing a new generation living out those same endless summer days.

In the lifeguard office, there's half a chocolate birthday cake sitting on the counter. When swimmers have leftovers, they drop them off with the lifeguards. "People bring over half a cake, or four boxes of pizza. It's basically like throwing it to the dogs, when you give it to the lifeguards."

Tyler Wooster, another of the guards at Tally Ho, says sitting in the sun and swimming in the pool makes lifeguarding the best job ever. Plus, he adds, you get to "look at girls pass by. You just gotta look forward, but with the eyes, follow them.

Though manager Devin Rudnick doesn't look like the type of guy who lays down the law, he shoots Wooster a stern glance. "Really wish I didn't hear that!"
