It's a new year and an opportunity for the District to - once again - try to impose a commuter tax on nonresidents who work in DC. The nonprofit group DC Appleseed plans to ask the Supreme Court to hear an appeal of a lower court ruling that upheld the constitutionality of the commuter tax ban. While legal analysts say they don't expect the court to take the case, they say the effort may help bring attention to the issue... and to federal legislation that would resolve the matter once and for all. Maybe. WAMU’s Lisa Nurnberger reports.
The first show of the New Year is always a good time to get out the crystal ball and see what 2006 has in store. WAMU’s Sidsel Overgaard sought out the forecasting help of a man who tries to keep all the jurisdictions in the Washington region working together and thinking ahead. Dave Robertson is the executive director of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.
WAMU Senior Commentator holds his nose... and dives into the Jack Abramoff affair.
January 8th. It’s a big day for famous birthdays. There’s Kojo Nnamdi. There’s my dad. And, of course, Elvis Presley. He would have been 71 years old this month. But what does Elvis have to do with the DC region? Well, Chick Hall’s Surf Club in Bladensburg, Maryland is hosting a party to honor “the King’s” birthday. It’s happening on Saturday night, the 7th… and will feature live music by local favorites the Hula Monsters… Mai Tai’s mixed according to a legendary local bartender’s recipe… and an Elvis fashion contest. Here to help explain is promoter Ted Smouse and members of the Hula Monsters who come fully armed with ukuleles.
It’s the start of another new year… a good time to check in with our travel expert to find out about some NEW getaway options in the region. And you might want to make sure you have good snow tires on your car… because Jim Yenckel will have us heading to Baltimore, Williamsburg, Pennsylvania and beyond.
Philippe Duverger grew up in Bordeaux, France. But in 2003, he bought the Savory Cafe in Takoma Park, and dared to ask his customers how to run his business - - he put out a clipboard by the register and asked for suggestions. Takoma Park has a reputation for activism and debate, and the coffee shop clipboard has become a lively forum for dialogue. Duverger says he reads it for reasons both professional AND anthropological. And as producer David Schulman found out, sometimes the comments even have to do with the food.
We tried to stop him, we really did. But Commentator Jim Helein wanted to wish everyone a healthy and happy 2006 by sharing some resolutions.
Jim Helein will be appearing in Charter Theatre’s new production, Monkeyboy, which opens tonight in Georgetown and runs through January 29th. Jim portrays the lead character – a giant, insult-spouting cockatoo. For more information you can visit chartertheatre.org
