Maryland legislators are considering a range of bills intended to strengthen, describe and redefine the institution of marriage. Some seek to expand the institution by conferring benefits to same-sex couples. Others would strengthen opposite-sex marriage through so-called "covenants." We look at different proposals, and explore the role of government and religious institutions in the American family.
