12:06Walkable Urbanism

Ever since World War II, the American dream has included a house in the suburbs. But as traffic and congestion turn the dream into a nightmare, residents are decamping to urban-style communities where they can walk more and drive less. Join Kojo as we look at how the Washington region is leading the country in the new trend toward "walkable urbanism."

Guests

Chris Leinberger, Visiting Fellow, Brookings Institution; professor and director, Graudate Real Estate Program, University of Michigan; author of "The Option of Urbanism: Investing in a New American Dream"

Chris Zimmerman, Member of the Arlington County Board

12:40Innovation Nation

John Kao was dubbed "Mr. Creativity" by the Economist magazine and taught the idea of "innovation" to a generation of Harvard Business School students. Kao explores why he believes America's innovation capacity is at an all-time low and needs a concerted National Innovation Strategy to regain our competitive edge around the globe.

Guests

John Kao, business consultant; founder of Kao & Company, an advisory and venture development firm; and author of "Innovation Nation: How America Is Losing Its Innovation Edge, Why It Matters and How We Can Get It Back" (Free Press)

13:06Education & The Tradition of Debate

Debate holds a special place in the history of American academia, particularly among historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). But many worry that the tradition is fading, as debate programs languish. One hundred years after the first debate between HBCUs, we learn about efforts to revive collegiate programs, and expand the tradition to local high schools and middle schools.

Jeffrey Porro, Story Writer, "The Great Debaters"; Communications Strategist and Speechwriter, Porro Associates LLC
