A few listeners had written wondering whether or not they wanted to invest in one of Mosaic's recent releases - The Complete Brunswick and Vocalion Recordings of Louis Prima and Wingy Manone (1924-1937), Mosaic MD6-217 They asked if we might feature some of the music one evening soon, and we obliged with this evening's program. Actually, it was a pleasure to profile the early Wingy Manone; it had been a long time!
I like a lot of the small-group recordings for the presence of many of the Bob Crosby guys, and have particularly strong feelings for the 1927 and 1930-31 recordings. So, we made this a somewhat broader profile than strictly the scope of the Mosaic box. The Mosaic collection includes a number of Wingy's earlyr recordings, but Mosaic's license did not embrace all of the early recordings. So, some of the selections this evening were played from Collectors Classics COCD-3, "The Wingy Manone Collection, Vol. 1 (1927- 1930)," which may be difficult to find.
I believe I remarked that Wingy shortened his name from "Mannone" to "Manone" in the late 1920s, but it may have been later. The spelling does not change on the labels of Wingy's records until later - and my sources differ on when this is! To keep things simple and so as not to put any sort of hex on the ole' wingster, we'll show "Manone" on all the small-group titles from 1934 and thereafter.
On a future occasion, we'll feature the Louis Prima discography from this same Mosaic set. However, remember that Mosaic releases are limited editions, so don't postpone your purchase too long.
