Gina Kolata of the New York Times discusses the influenza epidemic of 1918, which killed as many as 40 million people around the world. Today, scientists are working with long-preserved tissue samples of flu victims to try to learn what made that strain of this common virus so very deadly. Her new book is called "Flu" (Farrar Straus & Giroux).
