11:00The Search for Extraterrestrial Life

Aliens, extraterrestrials and flights to far away galaxies make for summer blockbusters and sci-fi novels. Some believe aliens are out there and NASA has launched a telescope to search for planets that could support life. An update on the search for E.T.

Alan Boss, research scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington and a member of its Department of Terrestrial Magnetism. He is a member of the Science Working Group for NASA's Kepler Mission to determine the frequency of Earth-like planets in the Milky Way Galaxy and serves on the Kepler Science Council, the group that will oversee Kepler's planet discoveries.

Jill Tarter, Director of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute's Center for SETI Research. She was the lead for Project Phoenix, a decade-long SETI scrutiny of about 750 nearby star systems. The Jodie Foster character in the movie 'Contact' is largely based on Jill.

Jon Jenkins, Principal Investigator for the SETI Institute at NASA Ames Research Center where he conducts research on data processing and detection algorithms for transiting extrasolar planet detection. He is the Analysis Lead for for NASA Discovery Program Kepler Mission.
