Bert Williams became one of America's first black superstars during the vaudville era. The author of this fictionalized account of his life explores the contradictions between the man he was and the character he played on stage.

The former executive editor of the New York Times writes about his childhood. He grew up in the aftermath of World War II, the son of a famous Rabbi and a peripatetic mother. It's the story of how our memories change over time and how a son rediscovered his parents.

Before that he served as the paper's managing editor, foreign editor, and correspondent in London, New Delhi, Hong Kong, and Johannesburg. He is the author of the Pulitzer Prize winning book "Move Your Shadow: South Africa, Black and White."
