In 1927, the great American poet Carl Sandburg published a folk music compendium he called "The American Songbag" -- a collection of ballads, spirituals, work songs, love songs, and other tunes from all our country's musical traditions. Musician Dan Zanes has pulled 25 songs from Sandburg's "songbag" for his new album, and joins us to talk about his effort to save this music from obscurity.
Dan Zanes, fronted the rock band "The Del Fuegos" in the 1980s, and now performs folk and children's music. His recent albums include "Hello Hello," "Sea Music," "House Party" and "Family Dance."
