In 1999, NPR's Weekend All Things Considered invited listeners to submit short, true stories for a new feature called the National Story Project. Acclaimed novelist Paul Auster selected, edited, and read on-air some of his favorites. Auster and NPR special correspondent Jacki Lyden join Diane to talk about the project and the new anthology I Thought My Father Was God and Other Tales from NPR's National Story Project (Henry Holt).

As the generations of your family gather for the holidays, are you wondering just how far back you can trace your family tree? Oxford professor Bryan Sykes talks about his genetic research, through which he can trace all people of European descent to a handful of pre-historic ancestors. His book is titled "The Seven Daughters of Eve" (WW Norton)
