Da Chen grew up in a rural Chinese village, amid the hardships of the Cultural Revolution. He joins Diane to tell the story of the poverty and political turmoil of his childhood, and to describe the unusual turns his life has taken since he arrived in the U.S. at the age of 23.

Jane Smiley is famous for her award-winning novels, but she's also a horse enthusiast -- she happens to own 16 horses! Her latest book, is set in the world of thoroughbred racing. She'll talk about the ins and outs of betting and breeding, and about how she pulled together a story with both humans and horses as characters.
