Nov. 19-24: Ruggles of Red Gap
Today is the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, and The AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring is marking the occasion with screenings of the 1930s black and white film Ruggles of Red Gap. It's based on the novel by Harry Leon Wilson and tells the tale of an English butler after he loses a life changing bet, forcing him to move to Red Gap, Washington. While working for a bawdy oil man, the butler forms a new identity for himself and a better understanding of a strange, former colony called "America." You can see the comedy tonight or Thursday at 7 p.m., or stop by this weekend. The final showing is at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Nov. 20: Kevin Barry
Tomorrow night you can hear Award-winning Irish author Kevin Barry read excerpts from his new short story collection, Dark Lies the Island, and his novel, City of Bohane. The free event is co-sponsored by the Irish Embassy, Irish Network-DC and Solas Nua, and will be held at the Warehouse Theater in Northwest at 7 p.m.
