"Don't Call Us Negras No Mo" by Jeffrey Kent is a collage piece that incorporates acrylic paint, golf leaf, crayon, and "slave-picked cotton". Like the other pieces in Preach!, the work combines art with social commentary.
Feb. 7-Mar. 31: Preach!
In his latest work, Baltimore-based artist Jeffrey Kent draws connections between the Civil Rights Movement and the continuing debate over marriage equality. Preach! is on display at the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park in Baltimore through March 31. The solo show blends history and politics in this thought-provoking body of work that features paintings, sculpture, and "slave-picked cotton" extracted from 19th century chairs.
Feb. 7: We Speak the Souls of Ancestors
Tonight you can head to 200 I Street in Southeast at 6 p.m. for We Speak the Souls of Ancestors, a gallery exhibition hosted by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. There will be an interpretive dance performance, poetry by D.C. Poet Laureate Dolores Kendrick, and work by local African American artists. The exhibit includes a variety of artwork that reinforces the concept of learning from the past.
