(Oct. 4-Feb. 18) What's doing, Detroit?
Detroit used to be what Silicon Valley is today: A center of technology, opportunity, and industry. Now the picture is not quite as rosy. Washington's National Building Museum spends the fall exploring the city's past and present through the work of two Motor City photographers. Andrew Moore offers classically inspired images of the city's ruins in Detroit Disassembled, and Camilo Jose Vergara focuses on two decades of decline and survival in Detroit Is No Dry Bones.

(Oct. 6-28) You can't go wrong with a Mini-Fridge
For a good look at the District and its denizens you can head to the Mini-Fridge, which is opening with a reception just behind The Fridge in Southeast this Saturday. Two local artists take two very different approaches to portraiture, including angular depictions of Washingtonians seen on the street and self-portraits inspired by First Lady imagery.

(Oct. 4-7) (e)merging artists
For art that will inform your worldview, there's the (e)merge art fair all weekend at the Capitol Skyline Hotel in Southwest. More than 150 artists from 24 countries exhibit their work.
