(Sept. 3-Jan. 27) Head to the desert, or the '80s
Happy Labor Day! If you didn't get away this weekend — but really wanted to — it’s not too late! You can explore a few different extreme desert landscapes from the comfort of Northwest Washington. Desert Air at the National Geographic Museum features the photography of George Steinmetz, one of the magazine’s best expedition photographers. The Stanford geophysicist captured most of the images while flying around in a customized aircraft best described as half-rocket pack, half-paraglider.
If you're up for some time travel, TRON screens twice today, Sept. 3, at the AFI Silver. Jeff Bridges dukes it out with a few digital bad dudes in the CGI-pioneering fantasy film from 1982.
(Sept. 3) Glen Echo Lark
You probably don't want to over-exert yourself today, but if you don't mind appreciating someone else's labor, there's the 2nd Annual Yellow Barn Drawing Exhibition at Glen Echo Park's Yellow Barn Studio. A couple dozen local artists present their work from noon to 5.
Music: "Lifeboat (Lovers' Rock)" by Penguin Cafe Orchestra
