(Aug. 23-Sept. 5) All’s Well That Ends Free
Every year the Shakespeare Theatre Company opens up its doors to the public for a few weeks of free performances. This year’s Free For All begins today and continues through September 5. The performance in question is All’s Well That Ends Well — one of those classic tales about a girl who wants a boy who wants anything but marriage. The ever-persistent girl does her best to get what she wants in the romance adventure that examines the limits of desire and willpower.
(Aug. 24-Sept. 30) Red Hook Summer
For a modern-day love story Red Hook Summer opens tomorrow at Washington’s West End Cinema. Like many that came before it, the latest Spike Lee Joint is set in Brooklyn, where a sullen young boy from middle-class Atlanta comes to spend a summer. Things get off on the wrong foot when his deeply religious grandfather relentlessly tries to convert him. Things get better when he finds a pretty girl his age to guide him through the culture shock of inner-city life.
Music: “Blue Monk” by Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane
