Documentarian Joshua Dylan Mellars explores the legacy of Maestro Ali Akbar Khan in Play Like a Lion.

(Aug. 22-23) Portuguese fado and Maestro Ali Akbar Kahn
Two music documentaries by one well-traveled director make their District debuts tonight and tomorrow at the U.S. Navy Memorial in Northwest Washington. The director is San Francisco-based documentarian Joshua Dylan Mellars and the documentaries are Heaven’s Mirror and Play Like a Lion. Heaven’s Mirror takes the viewer from Portuguese immigrant communities in the United States to the streets of Lisbon to recall the roots of soulful guitar-based fado music. Play Like a Lion explores the legacy of Hindustani classical musician Ali Akbar Khan with the help of the American and Indian musicians who knew him best.

(Aug. 23-Oct. 28) Red Hot Patriot
Red Hot Patriot opens tomorrow at Arena Stage. Film and theater veteran Kathleen Turner plays the late Texan columnist Molly Ivins in the production that remembers her rapier wit while weaving together a few personal stories that probe our nation’s politics.
