(Aug. 16-Sept. 30) The Cirque is back in town
Cirque du Soleil is back in the District, or at least pretty close. The touring troupe performs Totem at National Harbor through the end of September. This time around you’ll see close to 800 costume elements, trapeze, juggling, and high wire unicycles mingle to tell the story of mankind’s evolution. Everything from our primordial states to the aspiration of flight is set to Native American music, Spanish flamenco, and Indian folk.
(Aug. 18) Bellyhoo
The one thing Totem may not offer is belly dancing, but that’s okay because there’s a Belly Dance Carnival at Artisphere in Arlington Saturday night. So you’re probably asking yourself, “What does a belly dance carnival involve?” A belly dance carnival involves belly dance performances, belly dance lessons, games, revelry, henna, and lots of food.
(Aug. 16) Turtle Recall basks in light of timely remake
Funny band names are great, but they’re even greater when they become timely out of dumb luck. Reston’s Turtle Recall is enjoying some of that happenstance at the moment. The part rock, part folk, part bluegrass harmonizers celebrate the release of their debut album Thanks Anyway and the release of an updated Total Recall tonight at Iota Club & Cafe in Arlington.
Music: “Spanish Key” by Miles Davis
