(July 11-14) Not your average hip-hop theater festival
D.C.’s 11th Annual Hip-Hop Theater Festival is in full swing at the moment, and it brings the types of events you’d expect: poetry slams, concerts, dance performances. But there’s also Fat Boy. Ancient rice rituals are explored with the help of Jamaican dubstep music, hip-hop dance, and Indonesian-inspired visuals in the production making its D.C. premiere Friday at Dance Place in Northeast Washington.

(July 11-28) So. Many. Songs.
Signature Theatre in Arlington is between seasons at the moment, but it’s keeping its doors open for a few weeks of Summer Cabaret. Several of the theatre’s most familiar faces as well as a few understudies take to the stage to bring you Broadway’s best, James Taylor songs, improvised comedy and much more.

(July 14) Bo, a band, a Debo Band
If you like your music sprinkled with myriad influences, Debo Band is playing the U Street Music Hall Saturday night. The 11-member group from Boston led by an Ethiopian-American singer blends traditional Ethiopian songs with American funk and brass instrumentation with origins in Eastern Europe.
