(July 5-8) Giselle

If you notice something different in the air around The Kennedy Center today, it might just be romance. The Paris Opera Ballet, which happens to be the oldest national ballet company on the planet, drops by for the first time in nearly 20 years to perform Giselle through Sunday. A peasant girl dies prematurely in this love story, but she wards evil spirits off her man from beyond the grave.

(July 7) Castleton in the air

Every year the Castleton Festival brings a few weeks of classical music and performance to a farm in Rappahannock County, Virginia and, on occasion, a more traditional venue. There’s still plenty of the former to catch, but for a bit of the latter you can head to the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas Saturday night. Singers portray starving young artists in love in Puccini’s La Boheme.

(July 5-Aug. 24) Ansel Adams and the American West

If you want to see some country from your backyard, the Wilderness Society headquarters in Northwest Washington is displaying 75 images captured by Ansel Adams through late August. The iconic photographer donated the prints during the last year of his life in support of wilderness preservation.
