Step Afrika
The D.C.-based dance company Step Afrika kicks off a busy month with performances this weekend at Sidney Harman Hall.
(February 3-4) Step and Soul
The D.C.-based company, Step Afrika, is kicking off February, Black History month, with a dance celebration. The company will perform its classic work “Wade” -inspired by African American spiritual songs -- at Sidney Harman Hall this Friday at 8pm and on Saturday at 2pm and 8pm.
(February 4) Black History Month, Family Style
The National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum host a family-friendly celebration of African-American history on Saturday. There’ll be live music, a puppet show, and arts and crafts for the kids beginning at 11:30 a.m.
(February 1-October 14) Slavery at Monticello
And for a more somber exploration of the role African-Americans have played in our nation’s history, the National Museum of African American History and Culture offers the exhibition “Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: Paradox of Liberty.” It’s the museum’s first exhibit devoted entirely to the slaves who worked for America’s third president. The stories and artifacts of six enslaved families will be on display through mid-October.
