(Nov. 11) The Rivalry
When it comes to good old American debates you can’t do much better than the historic showdowns between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. Of course, you can’t usually do much more than read transcripts, which is why The Rivalry may be worth your time. The radio theater production is staged Friday night at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas. The two legendary politicians tackle all types of inequity, states’ rights and the role of the federal government in the drama presented by L.A. Theatre Works

(Nov. 10) Reward of Courage
The first public education film about cancer shows Thursday at the Keck Center in Northwest Washington. The National Academy of Sciences hosts 1921’s Reward of Courage. The film hasn’t been screened publicly in more than 60 years, at least partly because it was thought to be lost. The melodrama’s original purpose was to transform America’s perception about cancer by introducing the idea that early detection and treatment could help. D.C.’s The Snark Ensemble provides a newly commissioned live score.
