(Sept. 8-18) Short and sweet
If you like your films short and sweet the annual D.C. Shorts Film Festival kicks off today at venues throughout the District and Northern Virginia. 145 animated and live-action shorts from over 23 nations screen through September 18th. If you’re curious about the craft most of the filmmakers will be on hand to discuss their work.

(Sept. 8-Oct. 28) Mutual Inspirations to Czech out
Another festival gets underway today in Northwest Washington: Mutual Inspirations celebrates the life and work of Czech Romantic composer Antonin Dvorak with concerts, film, visual art and literature at the Embassy of the Czech Republic, The Kennedy Center and a number of other venues through late October.

(Sept. 8-Oct. 9) The Mysteries of Space and Place
The Adah Rose Gallery just opened this week in Kensington, Maryland and it’s not shying away from deep questions in its inaugural exhibit. Mysteries of Space and Place features the work of a local painter and a printmaker who use dense layers of color and text to explore memories and unfamiliar territory.
