You can save yourself some labor on the road and enjoy any number of local art events this weekend.

(Sept. 2) Capital Portraits

If you’ve never spent a happy hour or two at the National Portrait Gallery, you have a chance tonight. The Gallery bids adieu to Capital Portraits from 6 to 9. You can enjoy works from greats like Warhol and Cassatt on loan from private collectors in and around D.C. For further enticement, there will be a hip hop dance troupe, performance art and local beat aficionado DJ Natty Boom.

(Sept. 3-5) Page to Stage

The Kennedy Center celebrates the labor of hungry writers in its 10th annual Page to Stage festival this weekend. Forty area theater companies pitch in to help present free readings and open rehearsals of local and national playwrights, librettists and composers.

(Sept. 2-20) A labor of love

Maine’s governor recently removed a labor-themed mural from the state’s Department of Labor and sparked controversy in the process. A large-scale reproduction of Judy Taylor’s 11-panel piece is on view at Vis Arts in Rockville. The History of Labor in the State of Maine is accompanied by other works about work in Celebrate Labor: Where Art and Politics Meet through September 20th.
