(Aug. 29-Nov. 27) Exercise Your Mynd

The District’s BK Adams showcases his very personal work in Exercise Your Mynd at the Anacostia Community Museum through late November. The show features colorful portraits of the artist’s family and things he really loves, like airplanes and bicycles. Adams uses found objects to guide viewers through the landscape of his imagination.

(Aug. 29) Rahim AlHaj and his Oud

Rahim AlHaj has been playing the oud since he was a young boy growing up in Baghdad. The protest songs he sang as a grown man eventually got him imprisoned during the days of Saddam Hussein. Al Haj plucks his pear-shaped stringed instrument along with his Little Earth Orchestra tonight at the Kennedy Center.

(Aug. 29) 2011: A Crystal City Odyssey

You know summer’s officially coming to an end when all those outdoor projection screens are being packed up. Tonight’s your last chance to catch a flick on the screen in the Bell Street courtyard in Crystal City. The number-themed film series closes out the season with a screening of Stanley Kubrick’s science-fiction masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. The influential exploration of time, space and a not-so-nice computer named HAL begins just after sunset.

Music: “Fly Away” by Rahim AlHaj
