(Aug. 24-Sept. 25) A really good hair day

Some of us have hair. Some of us don’t. Some of us use hair to make statements about immigration and diversity. So Yoom Lym is part of the latter cohort. The Dreamtime is a show of her large-scale photorealistic paintings depicting different hair and braid styles. It’s at Alexandria’s Torpedo Factory Art Center through late September. Inspired by the diversity of her high school students, Lym uses impressive hairdos to highlight the richness of our local culture.

(Aug. 26-27) The film festival closest to Fredericksburg

If you’re looking for some fun far outside the Beltway this weekend, there’s the Rappahannock Independent Film Festival in Fredericksburg. The annual event features everything from local to international, including Wrestling for Jesus, a documentary about a South Carolina man who starts a Christian wrestling league and The Lost Samurai, which follows an experienced samurai who’s transported to modern day America and spends most of his time trying to get back home.

(Aug. 27-Oct. 23) MD Renaissance

If you’re hoping to do some transporting yourself there’s the Maryland Renaissance Festival this weekend through late October in Crownsville. Crafts, games, music and dance take over a 16th century English village.
