Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya is staged at the Kennedy Center through next Saturday. Australian playwright Andrew Upton’s adaptation of the tragicomedy finds the title character struggling to manage a farm as love affairs and unwanted visitors complicate things. Upton’s wife Cate Blanchett stars.

(Aug. 16-Sept. 10) Five new fellows

Hamiltonian Gallery in Northwest Washington welcomes five new Hamiltonian Fellows with an introductory exhibit through September 10th. Visual artists from across the continent present sculpture, photography, paintings and video that tackle topics like racism, pop culture and convention.

(Aug. 16, 18) The Birds are back in town
