Mantras in stitches, Guster at Wolf Trap and Cool Hand Luke on the Mall.

(Aug. 15-Sept. 24) Modern mantras

Fragments of overheard conversations inspired Mantra Samplers showing at Artisphere’s Mezz Gallery in Arlington through late September. Arlington’s Maribeth Egan mostly focuses on rendering overlooked everyday occurrences in her art and this collection is no different: Egan hand stitches overheard phrases like “You’re doing great” and “As soon as possible” onto digitally altered ink jet prints that set the scene.

(Aug. 15) Thoughtful tunes at Wolf Trap

Boston’s Guster brings thoughtful acoustic-guitar based pop songs to Wolf Trap in Vienna tonight. The band has been known to pack some serious charm and humor into its live performances.

(Aug. 15) Failure to communicate

Summer 2011’s Screen on the Green series closes out tonight with Cool Hand Luke. Paul Newman’s Luke Jackson creatively challenges authority figures in the classic 1967 prison drama. You can enjoy a number of “failures to communicate” on the National Mall between 12th and 14th Streets around 8 o’clock.
