A tremendous flower plants itself in Northwest Washington, all sorts of 'Scapes in Alexandria and the devil’s dirty work.

(Aug. 9-Jan. 5) Kiss from a Rose

The Phillips Collection in Northwest Washington is celebrating its 90th year with some special installations. One of them is a giant rose outside the gallery on the corner of 21st and Q Streets. New York sculptor Will Ryman’s massive steel and fiberglass flower is planted until early 2012. The structure transforms in the changing light of the fall and winter seasons, so you may want to check up on it from time to time.

(Aug. 9-Sept. 5) ‘Scapes at the Art League

For some more art depicting the natural world there’s ‘Scapes at The Art League Gallery in Alexandria through September 5th. The annual landscape portraiture show runs the gamut from cityscapes to rural scenes depicted in paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture.

(Aug. 10-Sept. 4) Something Past In Front of the Light

What would you do if the Devil asked you to collaborate on a documentary film? That timeless question is the subject of Something Past In Front of the Light, opening tomorrow at The Callan Theatre in Northeast. Washington’s Longrace Lea theatre company lightly explores a satanic film project that could lead to eternal damnation through early September.
