August 3, 2011 - A Tribal documentary, a piano party and lots of visuals at Touchstone.

(Aug. 3-4) Beats, Rhymes & Life

A Tribe Called Quest is widely regarded as one of the most influential and daring hip hop groups in the genre’s young history. Before breaking up in 1998, Tribe’s members fused hip hop with jazz sounds to great success-sampling everything from Lou Reed to Sergei Prokofiev, sometimes in the same song. The group gets the documentary treatment in Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, showing now at Washington’s E Street Cinema.

(Aug. 3-6) Piano party

The Washington International Piano Festival brings players together to bond over the blacks and whites at the Catholic University and the Kennedy Center. The festival celebrates classical music with lectures, discussions and recitals through Saturday.

(Aug. 4-27) Touchstone’s visuals

Northwest Washington’s Touchstone Gallery opens MiniSolos tomorrow. The exhibit showcases the mixed media work of 37 of the region’s visual artists through the end of August.
