Since May 3, 1971 All Things Considered has been produced every day from NPR's headquarters in Washington, D.C. Featuring a mix of news, interviews, commentaries, reviews, and offbeat features, "ATC" produces 2 hours of fresh content every day for hundreds of public radio stations around the United States.

Local Host, All Things Considered

Pat Brogan joined the WAMU 88.5 news team in 2007 after four years as a managing editor at WMAL-AM,and a brief stint at WTOP-FM, both in Washington, D.C. Prior to that, Brogan served nine years as a news anchor and reporter at WLW-AM in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has received multiple AP awards, and has covered local sports, including the Redskins, Nationals, and Wizards.

Actions Toward Protesters Alienate Mayor's Base

The Occupy encampment outside Oakland city hall has become a political quagmire for Mayor Jean Quan. Elected just a year ago, she was at one point a source of hope and inspiration for the city's liberals. Now, after her mishandling of the Occupy campsite — she forcibly evicted the campers, and then let them come back — she's managed to alienate friends and open up an opportunity for her political rivals. The situation may cost her the mayor's office before her term is up.

Can Tyra Banks Get Kids To School? Seattle Says Yes

Working with the national Get Schooled Foundation, Seattle officials are encouraging kids to sign up to receive celebrity wake-up calls — from Tyra Banks to rapper Wiz Khalifa. They say the recordings — plus a variety of prizes and mentorship programs — can give truant kids the extra push they need to make it to class.

Why Nails On A Chalkboard Drives Us Crazy

Robert Siegel talks to Michael Oehler, a music management professor at University of Cologne in Germany, about his study on why people get so irritated by the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard. Oehler led a team of researchers from the University of Cologne and the University of Vienna in a study designed to pinpoint the source of this and similarly irritating sounds. Scientists found that the most obnoxious elements of the noises may be amplified by the shape of the human ear.

Cain Donors Stand By Their Man For Now

NPR spoke with nearly two dozen Herman Cain campaign donors. Most say they don't believe the sexual harassment accusations and that they will consider giving more money to his campaign; two said they already had. But others are wavering, ever so slightly.

Jefferson County, Ala., Files For Bankruptcy

Lawmakers in Jefferson County, Ala., voted Wednesday to file for bankruptcy. It will be the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. For more, Guy Raz talks with Tanya Ott of member station WBHM in Birmingham.

The 2-1 ruling by the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., affirms the health insurance mandate at the core of law. The majority found the mandate to be consistent with Congress' constitutional authority to regulate interstate commerce.
