Podcast FAQ

  • What is a podcast?
A "podcast" is just another word for an audio or video file. These files, usually in MP3 form, can be downloaded from a website through an automatic "feed." They then can be heard whenever you want, either from your computer or a portable media player. They are comparable to television technology like TiVo, which allows you to watch your favorite shows after they are broadcasted.

  • Are they the same as audio files that have always been available online?
Podcasts are different from regular audio files, because they are portable and available on demand.

  • What does it mean when I subscribe to a podcast?
Subscribing to podcasts means that whenever a new episode is available, it will automatically download to your computer. When you subscribe, a few previous episodes will also be available to download.

  • Can I get archives of WAMU 88.5's shows through podcasting? We do not offer podcasts of old shows. Several years of The Diane Rehm Show, The Kojo Nnamdi Show, and Metro Connection are available for listening online, but not as podcasts.

  • How can I listen to them? To listen to podcasts, you need a program on your computer that supports them, known as “podcatchers.” The most popular is iTunes, but there are dozens of others available to download. All can be found online. Follow downloading instructions specific to your "podcatcher" to get them onto your computer or portable media player.
