Virginia House Beats Senate In Annual Basketball Game

Members of the Virginia House of Delegates and the State Senate are often in conflict with each other politically, but the rivalry also extends outside of the Capitol chambers to an annual basketball game.

Del. Tag Greason (R-Loudoun County) took the floor to gloat. The House basketball team trounced the Senate team 35-25. It's part of a longstanding tradition in a General Assembly known for its quirky side.

"I've been here for four years. We have not known defeat. We will not know defeat next year either," Greason said. "Mr. Speaker, I'm proud that we won again against the Senate."

But House Speaker Bill Howell wasn't having any of it.

"I know I speak for the whole House when I say 'big deal,'" he said.

The game was part of a fundraiser for the Massey Cancer Center at Virginia Commonwealth University. A separate basketball match featured the governor's office versus lobbyists. The lobbyists won.
