Maryland Lawmaker Joins Effort To Rename 'Negro Mountain'

Lawmakers in Maryland and Pennsylvania are teaming up to lobby for the renaming of an Appalachian mountain whose name some find offensive. The mountain sits on the border between the two states.

The name in question, Negro Mountain, is said to honor a slave who died fighting in the French and Indian war in 1756. The Appalachian ridge runs for 30 miles, bisecting the Mason-Dixon line in western Maryland.

Maryland State Sen. Lisa Gladden (D-Baltimore), wants to rename the peak to Black Hero Mountain. Pennsylvania State Rep. Rosita Youngblood (D-Philadelphia), plans to introduce legislation on her side of the border, saying the mountain should be named for the man, not the color of his skin.

Previous renaming attempts haven't gone over well. Local residents have resisted efforts dating back to the mid-1990s, when the U.S. Board of Geographic Names declined to rechristen the mountain.
