The Montgomery County Council is looking to petition the state government to implement more gun control measures.
Gun violence, and how to prevent it, is near the top of the agenda for the Montgomery County Council today. The council is considering a resolution urging state and national lawmakers to tighten gun laws.
The Montgomery County Council can't regulate guns, but the council will likely weigh in on the debate today, voting on a resolution asking the governor, the General Assembly and Congress to take action to prevent gun violence in the wake of the shooting last month in Newtown, Connecticut.
"The goal of the resolution is to encourage the state to move forward with a comprehensive approach to reduce the possibility of anything like what happened in Connecticut happening in Maryland," says Council member Phil Andrews, who chairs the council's public safety committee.
Among the actions urged by the resolution are bans on assault weapons, armor-piercing bullets, as well as measures aimed at keeping people with dangerous mental health issues from purchasing firearms.
