Montgomery County Elem. Schools May Get Security Upgrade

Play associated audio

Montgomery County is taking steps to make elementary schools safer in the wake of the shooting tragedy in Connecticut last month.

The Montgomery County School Board wants to boost security in the system's 132 elementary schools by adding a video intercom system at all main entrances, the Washington Examiner reports. Anyone seeking access to an elementary school during the school day would need to be cleared in by school stafferS.

While some elementary schools already have the system in place, the goal is for all 132 schools to have the video control system in place by July. The board voted unanimously for the security enhancement on Tuesday. The $364,000 expenditure is expected to be approved by the Montgomery County Council.

There are no plans for a similar system for middle and high schools, in part because of the expense and also because many older students enter and exit school facilities throughout the day.
