Gallaudet Reinstates Suspended Diversity Officer

Gallaudet University reinstated its chief diversity officer on Monday, the Associated Press reports. The move comes three months after Angela McCaskill was suspended for signing a petition calling for a referendum on gay marriage in Maryland.

Gallaudet president T. Alan Hurwitz announced the reinstatement of McCaskill in an email to the campus community on Monday. McCaskill was put on administrative leave, with pay, in October for signing a petition to put Maryland's same-sex marriage law to a vote.

She said her signature on the petition was to support the democratic process and had nothing to do with opposition to same sex marriage. But a university colleague and her partner asked the school's president to take action, which has now been rescinded.

The university's statement doesn't elaborate on the reasons for the reinstatement, and university officials have declined further comment.

The petition drive led to a referendum on gay marriage in Maryland, where McCaskill lives. Voters upheld the law, and same-sex couples began marrying in the state this month.
