Flu Cases On The Rise Earlier Than Usual, CDC Reports

Play associated audio

The latest report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows flu activity rising around the country, including along much of the East Coast. Twenty-nine states and New York City are reporting a high rate of influenza-like illnesses, especially for this time of year, which is relatively early in the flu season.

CDC officials believe the flu activities could continue for a few months more.

The overwhelming number of cases reported are influenza-A, which tend to be more severe with a higher number of hospitalizations and deaths. The CDC is recommending people get vaccinated against the flue asap, and those in high risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms should also consider taking anti-viral medication.
