A law enforcement official from Virginia has been chosen to serve on a presidential panel on gun violence created after the recent mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut.

John Dixon III has spent more than 20 years as a Richmond-area law enforcement officer. For the past five years, he's been working as the top cop for the city of Petersburg.

He's now serving as a member of the president's Gun Violence Task Force, which was established after the mass shootings in Newtown, Conn. in December. The panel, which is comprised of Vice President Joe Biden, members of the president's cabinet and law enforcement officials, has been tasked with coming up with a plan to curb gun violence by the end of this month.
