Prince George's Schools Struggle To Fill Nurse Positions

Play associated audio

Prince George's County school officials are fighting a nursing shortage, the Washington Post reports. There's no permanent, full-time nurse assigned to about 10 percent of the county's schools. The shortage has existed since last year.

The school system has lost nurses to retirement, attrition and higher-paying jobs, Karen Bates, supervisor of the health services office, tells the post. But Prince George's schools have hired about 20 nurses in the past three months.

The school district is considering whether nurses' aides could be hired to staff school nurse offices in place of registered nurses and licensed practical nurses, the Post Reports. Those aides are generally supervised by a registered nurse assigned to a region that includes several schools. As a temporary fix, the school system might also ask nurses at one school to treat students at another school.
