There will be many events around the Metro D.C. region to mark the 71st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, but one later today will have special significance for one World War II veteran from D.C.

Jack Faulconer Jr., a Washington native who now lives in Prince William County, will receive the Bronze Star for Heroism today nearly 70 years after he was wounded in battle. Faulconer, now 88, was an 18 year-old machine gunner when he landed on Omaha Beach in France a few weeks after D-Day in 1944.

He was severely wounded and left behind enemy lines, but Faulconer managed to survive and find advancing U.S. army troops. He almost lost his left arm and had to endure months of rehabilitation at Walter Reed army hospital.

Faulconer will be awarded the Bronze Star in a ceremony at the office of Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly in Annandale, Va.
